What You Need to Know for JLA#1 and The New 52

Posted on August 30th, 2011 - 16:39 PM by

At long the last the time has come! Th DC Universe is about to relaunch with 52 Brand new titles that offer fans the perfect jumping on point while continuing the long standing tradition of masterful storytelling  DC Comics has been known for. This week Jim Lee and Geoff Johns All-New Justice League #1 goes digital on the same day it hits stores in print, but before DC’s New Digital Age can really begin there are a few things you should know:

  • The Same Day as Print Digital Books from DC will be released at 2pm EST each week. This is to allow retail shops around the country to open their doors and provide print comics to their costumers.
  • The New 52 afternoon releases will follow after comiXology’s standard weekly Digital Comic releases.
  • Digital Comic Vouchers included in the JLA #1 combo pack can be redeemed when the issue goes live tomorrow afternoon.
  • Upon the first 4 weeks of release a $2.99 print comic will be a $2.99 digital comic. After 4 weeks, the digital price will drop to $1.99. Same goes for DC Comics priced at  $3.99 which will see the price drop to $2.99.
  • DC solicited the Flashpoint books as coming out in digital one month after print, so, we apologize, but those books will only be available at local brick and mortar stores until a month after release.

There you have it, hopefully the above list sheds some light on what to expect as we usher in an exciting new era for DC Comics. The New 52 has some of the top creators around attached to some of the most exciting new comics of the year, and comiXology is proud to be the exclusive provider of all your favorite digital comics as this bold new time for digital distribution begins.

Totally agree.  If I can subscribe to Wired digitally and save a ton, why can’t I do that for Justice League Dark?  I know there are differences in the business models, specifically where it comes to advertising, but it’s time for that to get worked out.

Just read the blog post, all other releases for the week will be at the normal time before the New52.

And what about if my flat burns down and I lose all my rare+old print comics?
Face it: you cannot insure yourself agains every loss in life.
Check the TOS, if there’s money left, you’ll get a refund.

The Long Term says:

before i invest whole hog in digital comics i need to know: if comixology goes bankrupt ten  years from or even twenty years from now, what will happen to the years of books i’ve accumulated in  my account?

What about those of us that could give two flips about DC? When are the other releases for the week coming out? Or are they being pushed off until next week? :(

Im sorry in advance here, but i have a rant ^^

Same day and time as print, digital distribution = king!
Same cost on digital as print.. well i guess it depends on who buys it, but it sure would get more people to try and buy if it was less on digital. It got me to go digital only.

Subscriptions, as someone said earlier would be awesome, especially with auto download for mobile devices.
To be able to buy whole arcs or multiple selections of comics on mobile would save alot of time and hassle and make me buy more. Its hard enough as it is on your webpage because of no multiple check boxes to buy multiple comics. Drag and drop comics to a visual bag or wishlist, that you could send to the checkout would be nice perhaps.
The view when viewing comics within a series is beyond horrible, there is no cover art, can’t see the whole name of the comic, can’t see the number of the issue, but i can see the whole synopsis… really bad design choice here. Sure there is an ‘i’ on the end.. but why make it so hard to see what comic is listed. would be nice with a view similar to the series view. Show coverart, then name and issue. Synopsis that is what the ‘i’ should show on mouseover.
The old OSx scrollbar really is horrible to look at and it screams ^^, Shoppingcart does not change looks if you have anything in it.No paypal or google checkout for superfast shopping/instant satisfaction/reading.A favourite page that you can somewhat customize would be nice, could clean up and hide those free comics/teasers/#0 and series/arcs you won’t ever read and make a nice clean and manageable view of the comics you want to show/read. Other than that i am pretty happy :)

Personally, I have a job so not getting my comics until 1 PM for me is not a big deal. I can’t read them until I get home anyway.

David Lomax says:

Can’t wait until 2PM.  In the meantime, if anyone’s interested, I made a video with my four-year-old to celebrate the re-launch:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=25M96u9i3AQ

Brian G says:

DC, please wake up and realize that digital is not the same as print and therefore you cannot charge the same out of the gate. No collect ability, no ability to share, no physical medium, means different price.

All other digital editions (Wired Magazine, GQ, etc) understand this and charge less than news stand. And deliver day and date.

This will eat into your direct market publishing side no more than what traditional mail subscriptions do.

John Ed says:

The 2pm release time is a mistake. I have teetered on the fence on whether to go digital or not, and believe it or not the few hours difference nudges me further to stay in floppy format. I have a lunchtime window to get and read my books. I had planned to download before going to work in the morning. Hrrm.

Louie4711 says:

So wait. This means I can’t download flashpoint #5 tomorrow before I read Justice League? That is lame!

2pm delay is a terrible idea, plus punishes those who live on the east coast more severely than the rest of the country.

I understand the need to provide some parity on pricing between Digital and floppy for the release time is a mistake. It doesn’t help the stores at all.

Ken says:

Smart model in terms of pricing. If you want it immediately, you’ll pay cover price. If you can wait, you can get a discount. What I wish they’d add is a digital subscription…I haven’t seen where you can say “I want all Green Lantern issues” like you can sign up for the print side.

Khenry100 says:

hellooooo $1.99!!!

Thanks, comixology, as always your professionalism and follow up for customers proves why your the best company in the digital comics marketplace. You’ve got yourself a customer for life.

I still think the delay until 2PM on New 52 digital is a bad idea.  All it really does is give the pirates a head start on scanning.
