COMIXOLOGY READER COMES TO WINDOWS 8
July 11th, 2012 – New York, NY – ComiXology, the revolutionary digital comics platform available on iPhone, iPad, Kindle Fire and the Web with over 75 million comic and graphic novel downloads to date, is proud to announce today the release of the Comics by comiXology reader Metro style app for the Windows 8 Release Preview. Designed with the Windows 8 Metro style look and feel, this “preview” release allows comiXology customers the ability to read most of their comics on the Windows 8 platform. ComiXology plans on having a full release of their app with in-app purchasing for the final release of Windows 8.
“Windows 8 is one of the most impressive operating system releases Microsoft Corp. has ever released,” said comiXology co-founder and CEO David Steinberger. “With the Metro style look and feel, we knew we had to deliver a customized experience especially for comiXology fans using this platform. Today’s preview release serves as just the start of what we can do on Windows 8.”
“We are very pleased that comiXology is building an app for Windows 8,” said Aidan Marcuss, senior director of Windows Core Marketing and Ecosystem at Microsoft Corp. “The app is an excellent example of combining the rich design features and the commerce flexibility of Windows 8, to produce a truly great reading experience. Windows 8 users are going to love reading their digital comics in the comiXology app.”
With Comics by comiXology for Windows 8, comiXology customers can login and read many comics they previously purchased. Comic books and graphic novels that have been previously or recently purchased on the comiXology webstore will be available to read in comiXology’s patent pending Guided ViewTM technology. Consumers can browse their comic library on the device or in the cloud. In addition, consumers will also be able to browse their collection using “Semantic Zoom,” a Metro style UI feature in Windows 8 that allows for pinch and zoom searching in alphabetical titles. Also new to Comics by comiXology fans is the ability on Windows 8 to read a comic side-by-side with other applications.
The release of Comics by comiXology for Windows 8 Release Preview follows on the heels of this spring’s Comics by comiXology 3.0 for Android release and the Comics by comiXology 3.1 for iOS release — which not only debuted new sharing features, but also the new CMX-HD file format to take advantage of the new iPad’s dramatically increased resolution. Within five days of release, comiXology had over 1,000 comic books and graphic novels out of their over 25,000 title library converted to the new format.
A full listing of features and benefits of Comics by comiXology for Windows 8 Release Preview includes:

The app is extremely buggy & unstable. I’m hoping that this is because it’s a preview. Unfortunately, there is no feedback or suggestion mechanism that I find in the app. If you’ve purchased a lot of comics, be prepared to wait for the covers to load every time you open the app.
While its not something I’ll use when we get to the release version, turns out it’s pretty easy to change the store region in the preview, and doing that I got hold of the app ok. http://www.thebloggieman.com/2012/06/how-to-change-windows-store-region-and.html has decent instructions on how to do it.
Of course I then found that the app had issues with some of the comics on the tablet (particularly the walking dead series out of what I’ve tested so far) so it’s either not fully accelerated (as the W500 has a relatively anemic processor), or its running into memory issues along the line which I think is less likely.
Still waiting for Internation Version.
Come on, give us an approximate date, at least.
Still not available in the UK! Come on Store guys
Ah well hopefully it gets rolled out in the near future – can read on the HTC flyer for now, but would definitely be better on the W500!
Nope, doesn’t appear to be available in the UK
I tried to get hold of this today on the W500 running the Windows Release preview, but it didn’t seem to be available in the store itself, although it was visible via the website. My suspicion is that the 1280×800 res is the culprit, although equally it could be being based in the UK! Also tried via Bluestacks but lets not even go there as wasn’t particularly successful!
Something I would like to see added to your site and apps is a permanent delete or hide feature. So I just got signed up for this site and got the app. What a mistake I made…. I turned on some music and spent an hour just adding EVERY free comic to my collection. My thought process was well it’s free and I can just delete all the crap I don’t like, nope. A permanent delete feature needs to be added or a simple hide feature. At least least allow us delete free comics and hide ones purchased with cash. I’ve read the comments in some of your sites past discussions and you said you were adding a permanent delete feature over a year ago….where is it. Also the apps you have need to allow us to organize our comics in the purchased section by ABC order or some other order, right now it just looks cluttered. This is just constructive criticism and some suggestions. I noticed the first thing on your sites FAQ is how do I permanently delete comics…. your response is “you can’t”….. why not? Legal reason or just not implemented? Some feedback would be nice.
P.S. I’m happy with everything else.
