Posted on April 28th, 2013 - 00:01 AM by

C2E2_Day_2Wow! Another Day at C2E2 has come and gone and with it more awesome excitement out of booth #919! Just when we thought Chicago couldn’t get any better you guys went a pulled a fast one on us with great Cosplay, awesome insights and stunning support for all things digital!

Day_2_7Today comiXology co-founder John D. Roberts sat on not one, but two panels delving into the world of comiXology. First at our “Creating Comics The ComiXology Way” Panel earlier in the day where the official 411 on all the latest and greatest in Guided ViewTM  was on display during a special behind-the-scenes look at what makes comiXology so great! Questions were answered, info was shared and a great time was had by all who attended this simply not-to be missed panel!

IMG_0508As the day rolled on so to did the friends and fans of comiXology. From Bandette Cosplayers to the recently initiated into the world of comiXology one thing was certain Chicago loves digital!

Day_2_11Later John D. Roberts got the chance to spill a few of the secrets to comiXology’s success during the “Comicpreneurs: Secrets of Successful Pop Culture Start-Ups” panel moderated by Rob Salkowitz and featuring Ted Adams of IDW Publishing and Dinesh Shamdasani from Valiant Entertainment. C2E2 attendees were treated to the rare chance to pick the brains of a few of today’s top comic entrepreneurs in this one of a kind panel.

With so much to see and do, it’s no wonder they call Chicago the windy city, but this whirlwind of a weekend is not over yet, and with plenty of amazing things to come be sure to check back here and follow the fun over on TwitterFacebook and Google Plus as the updates roll in from the show floor at C2E2!

C2E2 2013 Day 1 – Round-Up!

Posted on April 27th, 2013 - 00:29 AM by

We have officially arrived in Chi-town and C2E2 2013 is off to a great start! With Day 1 behind us we’re gearing up for more great times ahead as this epic weekend of digital comics, devoted fans and deep-dish pizza continues!

With the doors open and the convention in full swing, it’s safe to say today totally rocked! We’d like to extend a major thanks to everyone who stopped by our booth (#919) to say hello, give a high five and of course chat about comics and all things comiXology! We even had a few fans give shout-outs on our brand spank’n new Vine account that simply cannot be missed! Check ‘em out, and be sure to follow more of the fun this weekend over on TwitterFacebook and Google Plus!

To top it all off comiXology co-founder John D. Roberts took center stage at the “Digital First Comics: The New Trend” panel in room W476 alongside Mark Waid and Peter Krause plus surprise guests Reilly Brown and James Tynion IV, under the watchful eye of Moderator Matt Kolowiski AKA Slim. Shop was talked, fun was had and at the end of it all Waid shocked con-goers with news that Thrillbent’s new Aw Yeah Comics line will be launching on comiXology tomorrow!

All in all the day was one that shall not soon be forgotten, and with more surprises ahead as the weekend rolls on be sure to check back often for updates as they come in! With tomorrow’s “Creating Comics The ComiXology Way” and “Comicpreneurs: Secrets of Successful Pop Culture Start-Ups” panels featuring John D. Roberts once again one thing is for certain C2E2 2013 is going to be one for the record books.

Check out the photo’s below and if you’re heading to C2E2 this weekend be sure to stop by and say hello!

Spotlight on Submit: Moth City #1

Posted on April 24th, 2013 - 15:02 PM by

What happens when a Weta Workshop alum gets a grant from a New Zealand government arts funder to break the rules, change the game and make one killer webcomic? Easy, comic readers around the world are treated to a trip to Moth City, rarely to return the same.

Tim Gibson broke new ground with his one of kind approach to storytelling through Facebook under his Flying whites imprint a few years ago and now at long last this phenomenal work of Cowboys, Communism and Carnage has come to comiXology courtesy of comiXology Submit!

An engrossing and entertaining read… It’s sharp and it’s brilliantly illustrated… – Multiversity ComicsA crime/horror series with a highly polished style… and a healthy dash of noir – From Earth’s End Moth City is a fresh take on the murder mystery that lives at the intersection of detective fiction, noir-horror and 1970s Kung Fu movies. It is a story about control – when we lose it, when we gain it, and when others hold it over us.

From art as much inspired by David Mazzucchelli as classic pulp adventure comics, to a story as rich in detail as a Stephen King or Agatha Christie novel, Moth City is one great thrill ride of a comic. The first comiXology Submit book tailor made for comiXology’s patent pending Guided ViewTM technology, this is one book you don’t want to miss this week.

Staff Picks – Kate Kasenow Digital Editor and Freelance Artist

Posted on April 12th, 2013 - 11:39 AM by

kate portrait

From an early age Kate knew she loved art, but it wasn’t until college that she realized just how much she loved the combination of art and storytelling known as comics. In 2010 her first work as a professional artist was published in the form of a graphic novel and in 2011 she graduated from the Savannah College of Art and Design with an M.F.A. in Sequential Art. She currently lives in Manhattan, works at ComiXology, and spend her free time working on more projects including her next graphic novel. Check out some of her recent comic picks now available on comiXology!

Kate’s Picks:

The Sixth Gun: I had been hearing about this one for a while, but didn’t pick it up until New York Comic Con 2012. At soon as I opened the first volume, I was hooked on the simple but beautifully expressive artwork and when I started to read, I just couldn’t stop. By the end of the con, I had picked up and read the first three collected volumes. Siegfried, I’ve worked with Archaia before, so when I first heard some of their folks talking about Siegfried, I knew I should check it out. This old story brought to new life took me on an emotional journey and the absolutely stunning artwork reminded me of everything I want to do with my own work.

Hawkeye: Throughout school I was never a huge fan of Marvel’s comics, but working at ComiXology has exposed me to a lot of new ideas and Marvel’s comics are definitely one of those. These latest exploits of non-super hero Hawkeye are fun, witty, and accompanied by some incredibly well-designed art.

Atomic Robo: Two-Fisted Tales: To witness the comics medium expanding in such a way as to provide a more unique reading experience without losing the essential qualities of the art form is a wonderful thing; to watch this happening in an Atomic Robo comic is sheer delight. Plus, who doesn’t love a action-packed comics with hints of science?

More of Kate’s Picks:

Concluding the Saga #12 saga

Posted on April 10th, 2013 - 13:49 PM by

To our customers -

In the last 24 hours there has been a lot of chatter about Apple banning Saga #12 from our Comics App on the Apple App Store due to depictions of gay sex. This is simply not true, and we’d like to clarify.

As a partner of Apple, we have an obligation to respect its policies for apps and the books offered in apps.  Based on our understanding of those policies, we believed that Saga #12 could not be made available in our app, so we released the issue on our webstore and excluded it on the comiXology iOS app.

We did not interpret the content in question as involving any particular sexual orientation, and frankly that would have been a completely irrelevant consideration under any circumstance.

Given this, it should be clear that Apple did not reject Saga #12.

After hearing from Apple this morning, we can say that our interpretation of its policies was mistaken. You’ll be glad to know that Saga #12 will be available on our App Store app soon.

We apologize to Saga creator Brian K. Vaughan, Fiona Staples and Image Comics for any confusion this may have caused.

All the best,

David Steinberger
CEO and co-founder
comiXology

[UPDATED with addition of Fiona Staples to the final sentence of the post.]
