Thanos Rising #1 Or…Why the Colorist Counts!

Posted on April 5th, 2013 - 16:30 PM by

Much more than your typical bildungsroman set among the stars. Aaron and company deliver a story that lays the groundwork for possibly the greatest Saga the Marvel Universe has ever told. This is where it all begins; the birth of Thanos is met not with alarum but with despair. A mutant among the denizens of The Eternal’s underground city, it is all to clear right from the start that Thanos’ path in life can only be one of disorder, destruction and death.Ever since the end of last summers Avengers big screen debut, everyone has been talking about Thanos, The Mad Titian and now the time has arrived to explore this enigma of the Marvel Cosmic Universe with the release of Thanos Rising #1 now on comiXology. Of course long-time Marvel fans could tell you Thanos is not to be messed with. From his courtship with death among the stars in the original Infinity Gauntlet, to his re-emergence in the Cancer-verse in The Thanos Imperitive, the purple skinned terror is just about as bad as it gets but that didn’t stop the stellar of Jason Aaron, Simone Bianchi and Simone Peruzzi from exposing his long lost secrets to the readers of today in Thanos Rising #1.

With such a fantastic array of Talent attached to this title, it’s no secret Marvel has pulled out all the stops on this one. Long time Wolverine fan-favorite scribe Jason Aaron impresses when paired with artist Simone Biachi; fans of the duo’s previous work together already know this. However long-time fans and newcomers alike are in for a real treat thanks to Cover artist turned colorist Simone Peruzzi. All too often colorist and left in the corner when it comes to opening credits and other sundry, but here Peruzzi makes his presence known while talking his first foray into the interiors of a book set in The Marvel Cosmic Universe. The end result of which, are pages that pop in print, and absolutely sing in digital; especially in CMX-HD.

On paper, having a main character whose skin in purple seems put one ingredient in a recipe for utter disaster. However among the capable palette of Peruzzi Thanos have never looked better.  Leave the purple dinosaur jokes at the door – while the life and times of Thanos of Titan could hardly be considered a laughing matter, one thing’s for certain; the creative team on Thanos Rising has packed the book with as much detail as there is story and comics fans won’t be putting this book down anytime soon.

Let’s Get Digital: The Digital Comics Report For 3/14/2013

Posted on March 14th, 2013 - 09:56 AM by

We are back with another edition of Let’s Get Digital in time for this week’s releases. With so many great comics to choose from we know it can be a little crazy when it comes to picking out your pull list, so check out these buzz worthy books out now and don’t forget to join the fun with us over on TwitterFacebook and even Google Plus today!

Digital Firsts

Persia Blues #1: Minoo Shirazi is a rebellious young Iranian woman, struggling to define herself amidst the strict social conventions of an oppressive regime, and the differing wishes of an overbearing father, in between life in Iran and life in midwestern America. Minoo Shirazi is also a free-spirited adventurer in a fantasy world, a place where aspects of modern America and ancient Persia meld into a unique landscape. And yet, neither of these women are the true Minoo Shirazi. At the intersection of guilt and freedom, family and self, ancient myths and modern enigmas, lies… Persia Blues.

Edison Rex #6: Three familiar strangers make Edison Rex an irresistible offer. But is getting everything he’s ever wanted worth the price he would have to pay? And what would it mean for the rest of the world if he accepts?

Same Day as Print

Wolverine Vol. 5 #1: The best there is at what he does doing what he does best! When Wolverine finds himself the bargaining chip in a hostage situation, he must make a decision to save a little boy that will follow him forever…literally!

Shrugged Vol. 2 #1: You think you’re prepared, but you’re not. You’ve been decisive in your actions up to this point, but now things have been turned upside down. You feel you’ve conformed your mindset and are ready to accept what you’re about to experience, but you haven’t. That’s because SHRUGGED is back and ready to blow your mind! Theo and his friends are entering their final year of high school, and even though Ange and Dev are still along for the ride, a host of new characters have joined in on the adventure! But, everything isn’t all fun and games this time around as an evil force has also returned and is preparing to silence those voices inside their heads…permanently. If you thought you knew what fear was, you haven’t seen anything yet!

Batman (2011-) #18: In the wake of unspeakable tragedy, Batman is in danger of losing his humanity. And in the backup story, fan-favorite character Harper Row returns–but will she be able to pull Batman back from the brink?

Collections and Graphic Novels

Atomic Robo: The Flying She-Devils of the Pacific Vol. 7: Invented by Nikola Tesla in 1923, Atomic Robo went on be a soldier, a scientist, an entrepreneur, and an explorer whose adventures span the globe. This one begins in the South Pacific. The year is 1951. World War Two concluded six years ago, but its mark is felt in this remote part of the world in ways no one could have predicted…

Star Trek: The Next Generation/Doctor Who: Assimilation Vol. 2: When the Federation’s most terrifying enemy strikes an unholy alliance with one of the Doctor’s most hated antagonists, the result is devastation on a cosmic scale! Spanning the ends of space and time itself, Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the crew of the USS Enterprise find themselves joining forces with the Doctor and his companions, with the fate of the galaxy hanging in the balance!

New and Noteworthy

PunisherMax Annual #1: Eddie Gands is on the run from the crosshairs of the Punisher’s rifle. His only hope? A web of back-alley connections that might give Eddie home court advantage over his pursuer. That is, unless the Punisher is playing an entirely different game.

X-O Manowar (1992) #1/2: Prelude to the Wolfbridge Affair! Someone is breaking the most dangerous inmates out of Toyo Harada’s correctional facility for mentally unstable Harbingers and he needs Aric’s help to stop them!

Digital Firsts

Created exclusively for comiXology, using comiXology’s Guided View, and a digital comic that can only be experienced on comiXology – you’ve never read a comic like this before! It’s just another day in the life of Atomic Robo until a mysterious enemy from his past strikes! Wait, that really is just another day in the life of Atomic Robo. In fact, this time he doesn’t even know who it is. Hey, when you’ve been around for 90 years, you lose track of all your nemeses.

Guardians of the Galaxy Infinite Comic #1: Marvel’s cutting-edge Infinite Comics are back and this time it’s the Guardians of the Galaxy that get the infinite digital treatment! Prepare to take to the spaceways with a reading experience like no other!

Same-Day-as-Print

SEX #1: This series is rated Adults Only DISCLAIMER: GRAPHIC CONTENT WARNING: As stated in his afterword, veteran superhero writer Joe Casey still revels in “wild, heroic action stories”, but believes it is time to “take back the ‘alternative comix’ tag…for our own perverse pleasure.” This envelope-pushing series offers the best of both worlds, with brainy intrigue, costumed avengers, cyberpunk glamor, and of course, graphic sexuality. Reader discretion is advised.

Age of Ultron #1 (of 10): For years the heroes of the Marvel Universe have lived in fear that the artificial intelligence known as Ultron would one day evolve to fulfill its desire to wipe out all organic life and take over the Earth — that day has arrived. The Avengers worst nightmare is here– the Age of Ultron has begun.

Collections and Graphic Novels

Werewolves of Montpellier: Named to NPR, Las Vegas Weekly, Graphic Novel Reporter, The Casual Optimist, Comic Book Resources, Attentiondeficitdisorderly, Hypergeek, and Robot 6′s Best of 2010 lists. Sven, a semi-aimless Scandinavian artist who has ended up in Montpellier, France on a futile romantic pursuit, enjoys nocturnal raids into other people’s homes, disguised as a werewolf.

The Antler Boy and Other Stories: Flying whales, giant imaginary pink bunnies, friendly robots, curious aliens, space explorers, and adventurers all find a home between the covers of this book. The Antler Boy and Other Stories collects 10 short stories written and illustrated by Jake Parker, New York Times bestselling illustrator and creator of the Missile Mouse graphic novel series from Scholastic.

New and Noteworthy Back issues

The Mire: On the eve of a great battle, a humble squire is tasked with delivering a letter to a seemingly abandoned castle at the heart of an ill-famed swamp. Met with mysterious apparitions on the way, he slowly unveils the truth behind his journey as his past is re-written over the course of the story.

Detective Honeybear #1 & #2: Detective Honeybear is an adorable bear detective in a noir, mystery world. Join him and his partner Detective Chance as they try to solve the case of the curious cap!

Looking For Group #1: From the Shuster award winning creators of “Least I Could Do” and “Gutters” comes a loving nod to classic fantasy novels that manages to flip the genre on it’s head. Unlikely heros cut a swath through a fantasy world that is extremely familiar and yet very different. A naive elven hunter makes an strange friend in an undead warlock and the two manage to make both enemies and friends as they fight the good fight against the Legaran Empire.
