Staff Picks – Kate Kasenow Digital Editor and Freelance Artist

Posted on April 12th, 2013 - 11:39 AM by

kate portrait

From an early age Kate knew she loved art, but it wasn’t until college that she realized just how much she loved the combination of art and storytelling known as comics. In 2010 her first work as a professional artist was published in the form of a graphic novel and in 2011 she graduated from the Savannah College of Art and Design with an M.F.A. in Sequential Art. She currently lives in Manhattan, works at ComiXology, and spend her free time working on more projects including her next graphic novel. Check out some of her recent comic picks now available on comiXology!

Kate’s Picks:

The Sixth Gun: I had been hearing about this one for a while, but didn’t pick it up until New York Comic Con 2012. At soon as I opened the first volume, I was hooked on the simple but beautifully expressive artwork and when I started to read, I just couldn’t stop. By the end of the con, I had picked up and read the first three collected volumes. Siegfried, I’ve worked with Archaia before, so when I first heard some of their folks talking about Siegfried, I knew I should check it out. This old story brought to new life took me on an emotional journey and the absolutely stunning artwork reminded me of everything I want to do with my own work.

Hawkeye: Throughout school I was never a huge fan of Marvel’s comics, but working at ComiXology has exposed me to a lot of new ideas and Marvel’s comics are definitely one of those. These latest exploits of non-super hero Hawkeye are fun, witty, and accompanied by some incredibly well-designed art.

Atomic Robo: Two-Fisted Tales: To witness the comics medium expanding in such a way as to provide a more unique reading experience without losing the essential qualities of the art form is a wonderful thing; to watch this happening in an Atomic Robo comic is sheer delight. Plus, who doesn’t love a action-packed comics with hints of science?

More of Kate’s Picks:

Concluding the Saga #12 saga

Posted on April 10th, 2013 - 13:49 PM by

To our customers -

In the last 24 hours there has been a lot of chatter about Apple banning Saga #12 from our Comics App on the Apple App Store due to depictions of gay sex. This is simply not true, and we’d like to clarify.

As a partner of Apple, we have an obligation to respect its policies for apps and the books offered in apps.  Based on our understanding of those policies, we believed that Saga #12 could not be made available in our app, so we released the issue on our webstore and excluded it on the comiXology iOS app.

We did not interpret the content in question as involving any particular sexual orientation, and frankly that would have been a completely irrelevant consideration under any circumstance.

Given this, it should be clear that Apple did not reject Saga #12.

After hearing from Apple this morning, we can say that our interpretation of its policies was mistaken. You’ll be glad to know that Saga #12 will be available on our App Store app soon.

We apologize to Saga creator Brian K. Vaughan, Fiona Staples and Image Comics for any confusion this may have caused.

All the best,

David Steinberger
CEO and co-founder
comiXology

[UPDATED with addition of Fiona Staples to the final sentence of the post.]

Blind Ferret and Acclaimed Fantasy Author Joe Abercrombie Announce THE FIRST LAW comics!

Posted on April 10th, 2013 - 10:51 AM by

For Immediate Release:

Blind Ferret and acclaimed fantasy author Joe Abercrombie announce THE FIRST LAW comics!

Comics available now digitally via comiXology and online at http://www.firstlawcomic.com/

April 10, 2013, Montreal, Canada, New York, NY – Blind Ferret Entertainment and New York Times bestselling novelist Joe Abercrombie announced today their agreement to bring THE FIRST LAW series of fantasy novels to comics, starting with the first book in the series The Blade Itself. Experience the entire first issue today  via comiXology and the first 12 pages through http://www.firstlawcomic.com.

“The blade itself incites to deeds of violence.” – Homer

Logen Ninefingers, infamous barbarian, has finally run out of luck. Caught up in one feud too many, he’s on the verge of becoming a dead barbarian, leaving nothing behind but some bad songs, a few dead friends, and a lot of happy enemies.

Captain Jezal dan Luthar has nothing more dangerous in mind than fleecing his friends at cards and dreaming of glory in the fencing circle. But war is brewing, and on the battlefields of the frozen North they fight by altogether bloodier rules.

Inquisitor Glokta, cripple turned torturer, is cutting treason out of the Union one confession at a time. His latest trail of corpses may lead him right to the rotten heart of government – if he can stay alive long enough to follow it.

Murderous conspiracies rise to the surface, old scores are ready to be settled, and the line between hero and villain is sharp enough to draw blood. Unpredictable, wickedly funny, and packed with unforgettable characters, The Blade Itself is fantasy with
a real cutting edge.

Industry veteran Chuck Dixon (The Punisher, The Simpsons) is handling scripting, with detailed artwork by Andie Tong (The Batman Strikes, Tron: Betrayal), and stunning colors by Peter Pantazis (Justice League of America, Superman/Batman). Joe Abercrombie
is personally overseeing all stages of production on the title.

“This whole process has been a real delight for me, ” said Joe Abercrombie. “Seeing Chuck whittle the book into scripts, seeing Andie put faces, expression, and action to my characters, and seeing Pete’s colors bring the whole thing to life. The results
really have exceeded my highest hopes.”

The entire first issue is available now for 99 cents from comiXology the revolutionary digital comics platform available across the iPhoneiPadAndroidKindle FireWindows 8 and the Web. Future digital issues will also be available for purchase from comiXology. Each issue bought through comiXology will include an exclusive 8-page sketchbook bonus section full of concept and pencil artwork from artist Andie Tong. Additionally, the first twelve pages to issue #1 can be viewed and read online now at www.firstlawcomic.com. New pages will be posted each week, with 1 new page going up every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The Blade Itself Vol. 1 graphic novel will be published in print later this year, and will collect the first 4 issues.

The First Law series of novels have been translated into 26 languages worldwide and sold over two million copies, garnering a ton of acclaim along the way. On April 10th, 2013, come see this vivid fantasy world come to life in full color!
